ABOUT
No Name Kitchen (NNK) is an NGO comprised by volunteers from several countries and develops its activities in Šid (Serbia), 5km away of the Croatian border, in Velika Kladuša (Bosnia), 2km away of Croatia.
The NNK was born on February 3rd, 2017 in Belgrade. At that moment, the driving forces of the project, started to provide food and kitchen resources in order to cover, at least partially, the basic needs of all the refugees who lived in the old barracks of the train station. In collaboration with them, we got to distribute more than 500 meals per day, in a time period where the temperature dropped to -20º.
On May 10th, 2017, the Serbian government evicted and demolished the barracks, which meant that more than a thousand people were dispersed and forced to enter in the camp system or, in the measure of possible, in the asylum system.
This measure implied an standstill of the people who were forced to move to the camps located in the south of the country, 500km away from the Croatian border. At the same time, the institutions don’t propose any mean of development towards a dignified way of life in a country where getting asylum is practically impossible (during 2017, only 4 people were granted this status of more than 20.000 thousand who received counseling on asylum, based on the UNCHR data).
19 days later, the NNK moved its activities to one of places where it’s still present currently: in Šid, one of the hottest spots for migration with destination to the EU. Since that moment, the level and areas of intervention have been increased, which are explained in the tab WHAT DO WE DO.
In parallel to the coverage of basic needs, the project considers as main goal to foster the solidarity between equals from the integration, respect, no discrimination and mutual support; at the same time, sets out the empowerment of the refugees, within the scope of their limitations because of his current condition, which is reflected in their participation in the daily tasks and in their influence in the decisions made.
